WELCOME TO YOUGH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:
Greetings from Yough Senior High School, home of the Cougars! On behalf of our teachers and staff, we would like to welcome you! Our mission is to create a safe learning atmosphere that cultivates academic, social, and emotional skills, which challenge, motivate, and inspire students to achieve their full individual potential. With your help, we can achieve this mission.
Our rigorous curriculum is the foundation that will prepare all of our students for future endeavors. To do this we offer a variety of academic programs:
Dual credit classes, through Yough Senior High and The University of Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County Community College, and Mt. Aloysius College, let students get a jump start on college for a fraction of the tuition price. These classes, taught by our instructors during the standard school day, qualify for both high school and college credit simultaneously. The Dual Enrollment Program is open to juniors and seniors, with courses covering a variety of subject areas.
In addition to our Dual Enrollment Program, we offer a number of Advanced Placement classes, and through a partnership with Project Lead The Way, we are proud to offer an engineering course. Our college and career-ready initiative doesn’t end with college preparedness. For example, through our partnership with the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology center, students may enroll into industry based technical and certification programs designed to meet the needs of an evolving workforce and develop skills for lifelong learning and living. Several of our students earn certifications and credentials in many areas including welding, construction, transportation/logistics, cosmetology, healthcare, auto body/mechanics, emergency services, and computer technology - to name a few.
Besides academics, we offer extracurricular programs in the the performing arts (drama, band, chorus) and interscholastic athletics, competing in the WPIAL. We also have several clubs, including NHS, The Future is Mine, Student Council, Yearbook, Art NHS, Chorus, Marching Band, Colorguard, FBLA, CAP/SADD, Spanish and French clubs, Robotics, Prom Committee, YALE, Student Mentor, Journalism, Strategies, PRIDE, Spirit, Outdoors and Envirothon. These clubs help meet the interests of all our students and provide opportunities for them to get involved with their school!
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to view their student’s progress and attendance through the Powerschool Parent Portal, linked to our web site. Attendance is important to the success of our students. Being connected and involved makes it more likely that they will care about their education now and in the future.
Thank you for taking the time for visiting our web site. We look forward to working with you this school year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Sutherland, Principal
Mr. Wilkins, Assistant Principal
