Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2021

Plans are underway for the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2021.  Commencement will take place on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 7:00 PM at the Stadium on Cougar Mountain.  It is a ticketed event, meaning you must have a ticket in order to watch it in-person.  Due to COVID-19 Health Department and CDC regulations, ticket availability will be extremely limited this year.  Seniors will be given 6 (SIX) tickets to distribute to their family/friends.

If we experience weather-related issues and since we cannot use the gymnasium for the ceremony, we have established rain make-up dates at the stadium:  Rain Date #1 - Monday, June 7 (7:00 PM ); Rain Date #2 - Tuesday, June 8 (7:00 PM), and Rain Date #3 - Wednesday, June 9 (7:00 PM).  The Graduation Ceremony will be live streamed on our school's YouTube page.  The link will be posted on our website on the day of Commencement.  Seniors and their parent/guardian may access important graduation details by clicking on the Senior Bulletin:   Senior Bulletin - GRADUATION.pdf

Keystone Exam Testing & Career Readiness Activities

We will be conducting Keystone Exam Testing on May 18, 19, and 20 here at Yough Senior High School for all 9th and 10th grade face-to-face and Virtual Recorded/Live students enrolled in a Keystone trigger course.  Parents/Guardians of our freshmen and sophomores will receive a mailing that indicates which day(s) their student will test and other important details.  11th and 12th graders will not have to report to school on those days, provided they participate in career readiness activities or complete work/make-up work in their teachers' Google Classrooms.  Here is a copy of a letter that will be mailed to all parents/guardians:

Congratulations Walter Vinoski

Congratulations to senior Walter Vinoski on his showing at the annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair (PRSEF) held virtually at the Carnegie Science Center on March 24th.

Walter’s experiment, “Bassoon Double Reed Analytics” won the Carnegie Science Award Senior Division and 1st Place in the Physics and Astronomy Category.  He also was a recipient of the Perseverance Award, Associate Scientists, for 11th or 12th graders with 3 or 4 years of participation at PRSEF.

Since 1940, the 82nd Annual Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair challenges middle and high school students from across Western Pennsylvania to design, implement, and communicate an original science experiment while competing for cash prizes and scholarships.  Each year over 1,000 students from over 100 schools participate.

Here is the link to see how Walter did and to learn more about PRSEF.

Yough selected as a Best Community for Music Education!

It gives us great pride to announce that Yough was selected, for the second year as a row, as a Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation!

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide quality music access and education to all students. District music faculty submitted a full review of the music program including ensembles, funding, concert programs, student musical achievements, graduation requirements, community involvement, the music faculty's education background, and the music program's representation at district, regional, and state levels. This year, applicants were required to submit how they were promoting music, public performances, private in-school events, and enrichment for students during virtual learning.

Thank you to our students, parents, music faculty, administrators, school board members, and community members for your support of the musical arts within Yough.

Welcome to Yough Senior High School

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:

Greetings from Yough Senior High School, home of the Cougars!  On behalf of our teachers and staff, we would like to welcome you!  Our mission is to provide all students with a 21st-century learning experience in a collaborative and supportive environment.  With your help, we can achieve this mission.

Our rigorous curriculum is the foundation that will prepare all of our students for future endeavors.  To do this we offer a variety of academic programs:

Dual credit classes, through Yough Senior High and The University of Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County Community College, and Mt. Aloysius College, let students get a jump start on college for a fraction of the tuition price. These classes, taught by our instructors during the standard school day, qualify for both high school and college credit simultaneously.  The Dual Enrollment Program is open to juniors and seniors, with courses covering a variety of subject areas.

In addition to our Dual Enrollment Program, we offer a number of Advanced Placement classes, and through a partnership with Project Lead The Way, we are proud to offer an engineering course.  Our college and career-ready initiative doesn’t end with college preparedness.  For example, through our partnership with the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology center, students may enroll into industry based technical and certification programs designed to meet the needs of an evolving workforce and develop skills for lifelong learning and living. Several of our students earn certifications and credentials in many areas including welding, construction, transportation/logistics, cosmetology, health and safety, and computer technology - to name a few.

Besides academics, we offer extracurricular programs including the performing arts and interscholastic athletics, competing in the WPIAL.  We also have several clubs, including NHS, Student Council, Yearbook, Art NHS, Chorus, Marching Band, Colorguard, FBLA, CAP/SADD, Spanish and French clubs, Robotics, Prom Committee, YALE, Pride, Student Mentor, Journalism, Strategies, Spirit, Outdoors and Envirothon.  These clubs help meet the interests of all our students and provide opportunities for them to get involved with their school!

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to view their student’s progress and attendance through the Powerschool Parent Portal, linked to our web site.  Attendance is important to the success of our students.  Being connected and involved makes it more likely that they will care about their education now and in the future.

Thank you for taking the time for visiting our web site.  We look forward to working with you this school year!

Mr. Sutherland, Principal
