Welcome to Yough Senior High School

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:

Greetings from Yough Senior High School, home of the Cougars!  On behalf of our teachers and staff, we would like to welcome you!  Our mission is to provide all students with a 21st-century learning experience in a collaborative and supportive environment.  With your help, we can achieve this mission.

Our rigorous curriculum is the foundation that will prepare all of our students for future endeavors.  To do this we offer a variety of academic programs:

Dual credit classes, through Yough Senior High and The University of Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County Community College, and Mt. Aloysius College, let students get a jump start on college for a fraction of the tuition price. These classes, taught by our instructors during the standard school day, qualify for both high school and college credit simultaneously.  The Dual Enrollment Program is open to juniors and seniors, with courses covering a variety of subject areas.

In addition to our Dual Enrollment Program, we offer a number of Advanced Placement classes.  Our college and career-ready initiative doesn’t end with college preparedness.  For example, through our partnership with the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology center, students may enroll into industry based technical and certification programs designed to meet the needs of an evolving workforce and develop skills for lifelong learning and living.

Besides academics, we offer extracurricular programs including the performing arts and interscholastic athletics, competing in the WPIAL.  We also have several clubs, including NHS, Student Council, Yearbook, Art NHS, Chorus, Marching Band, Colorguard, FBLA, CAP/SADD, Spanish and French clubs, Robotics, Prom Committee, YALE, Pride, Student Mentor, Journalism, Strategies, Spirit, Outdoors and Envirothon.  These clubs help meet the interests of all our students and provide opportunities for them to get involved with their school!

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to view their student’s progress and attendance through the Powerschool Parent Portal, linked to our web site.  Attendance is important to the success of our students.  Being connected and involved makes it more likely that they will care about their education now and in the future.

Thank you for taking the time for visiting our web site.  I look forward to working with you this school year!

Mr. Sutherland

Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2020:

Because of the difficulty to predict our level of restriction and inability to gather in large groups due to the Coronavirus pandemic and after careful consideration of our limited options available to comply with county and state health department and CDC mandates, our graduation ceremony will be conducted in 2 parts over the course of this summer.

While in the ‘Yellow’ Phase of recovery, Part one will take place on Friday, May 29th at 7:00 PM. It will be an online ‘virtual’ graduation ceremony.  A link will be posted to the school district website at, enabling anyone, anywhere with an internet connection to celebrate our seniors as they graduate in the safety and comfort of their homes. Our graduates will be able to enjoy the ceremony with their families and do not need to dress up.  Simply watch, enjoy, and CELEBRATE!

Later this summer, with hopes we are finally in the ‘Green’ Phase of recovery, Part two will take place on Friday, July 24th at 7:00 PM.  It will be an in-person, large gathering, traditional graduation ceremony at the high school stadium on Cougar Mountain.  July 31st will serve as a rain date.

If we are still in the ‘Yellow’ Phase of recovery at that time, we will not be able to hold a large, outdoor ceremony.  Instead, we will reserve August 1st and 2nd for  in-person, socially distant  graduate and family mini ceremonies held at the stadium at scheduled time intervals.  All graduates will be given a specific time to come to the stadium with their family, donning their cap, gown, diploma, be given a chance to walk across the stage and have their name announced and picture taken.  Depending on our status of Green or Yellow will determine how we celebrate graduation for this second part of our plan.

Remember, specific details on our 2-part graduation ceremony will be shared in a mailing.  You can expect it by Tuesday, May 26th.

I would like to thank you for your patience and understanding with us as we have developed a comprehensive plan for graduation despite the challenges of social distancing, stay at home orders, etc. with this pandemic.  We are unbelievably proud of our Class of 2020 and all of their accomplishments, and look forward to celebrating them with you.

- Mr. Sutherland

Announcement:  Yough Senior High School Families:

With the most recent extension of the Commonwealth’s social distancing guidelines, we must postpone our April 24 Prom date.

Despite the many challenges the Covid-19 virus is presenting, Yough School District is continuing to plan for the end of the year.  Although we have not set any final dates, we are committed to having the prom, musical, and graduation ceremonies when the time is appropriate.  Dates will be announced when those decisions have been made.

Congratulations to Mr. Shaffer and his Video Production students on their 2nd place finish in the PIAA's annual video contest..  They created a public service commercial for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association's annual "Don't Let Pain Become A Killer" campaign.  You can see their video below (takes you to Youtube):
